If you are interested in participating in this research project, contact the SMiLE study. We will set up an appointment to check your blood pressure and see if you are eligible.

WHAT IS INVOLVED IN PARTICIPATING?

  Summa Health System
This is a treatment study of stress management training for high blood pressure. First, we will measure your blood pressure several times to determine if you are eligible. Then, people who are eligible and who want to participate will be given either progressive muscle relaxation training or mindfulness-based stress reduction training. The treatment is 2-hour group meetings each week for 8 weeks. You must be willing to participate in either treatment before you start because, the treatment you receive will be decided on a random basis, like flipping a coin. Before and after stress management treatment, you will have your blood pressure measured at the hospital and as you go about your daily life.

ARE THERE BENEFITS TO PARTICIPATING?

All participants receive information on lifestyle changes that should reduce high blood pressure. All participants receive 8 weeks of free mindfulness based stress reduction or progressive muscle relaxation. Both of these programs are accepted stress reduction techniques, although we do not know if they lower blood pressure. Finally, all participants will receive the training in one of these stress management programs at no cost AND can receive up to $200 to compensate you for your time.
